Diamonds from the Rough

Very secluded spot

Really fun course, with lodging

Very much an 18-piece box-of-chocolate layout

Fairways are splendidly soft, even after a dry spell

Seven drivers and seven three woods is a reasonable expectation

There’s big terrain around you and rolling terrain beneath your feet

Deep swale fronting the 14th green doesn’t announce itself until you get there

How No. 9 winds up back at the clubhouse is one of life’s great unsolved mysteries

Par 5 7th and its convex fairway and woods on both sides can suck up a sleeve all by itself

Be very loose on the first tee, make sure you have a second ball in the bag, or pack scuba equipment

Listen attentively to that voice whispering “one more club” at the short uphill par3 3rd

The ups and downs notwithstanding, it can be walked if you’re in good shape

No. 13 might be the meanest tee shot you’re asked to place all season

Don’t think you’re getting off easy at 6300 yards from the tips

Nerve-jangling approach on 14 involves not a drop of water

Sometimes it does get buggy

15th hole could use a bell

Putts are rarely level
