Diamonds from the Rough

Tree-lined but driver-friendly

Squarest greens you’ll ever see

Alive and very well following a caring restoration

Par 3s on the front are short, but far from comfortable

Don’t pig out at the turn – No. 10-14 require ferocious and athletic swings

Dips and swales galore greet you at the first fairway and carry right on for 18 holes

Just on the edge of Hartford proper and maybe the most secluded course you’ll play all year

Has more than a little Bethpage here and Oakmont there from a terrain and design standpoint

STREAM!  On the back nine it never stops stalking you. Or is there more than one stream? And why is there a cemetery over there?

If you come in the back way, the drive to the clubhouse is surrounded by an old-growth forest and what you find inside is actually a little magical

The imaginative bunker renovations are to Keney Park what the addition of color was to the Old Gray Lady

After about two holes you’ll find yourself proclaiming, “Add this course to the rotation!”

Desperately needs more yardage markers with all the blind shots it throws at you

No. 17 is named “Round-the-Bend”, but should be called Dealey Plaza

Deride munis all you like, but they often get the best pieces of land

A tremendous revelation if it’s your first visit

Greens roll very true, if a little slow

Weird tee bunkers

My first time playing Keney Park. From what I heard, the renovation is a success. Nice course, well maintained. Greens were a little soft.

Played today and was very impressed. What a great job on the redesign. I have played a number of times many years ago and it was fun and at the time not in bad shape. the green complexes were incredible, many big undulations make you think and are very fair but challenging. the course had some brown spots mostly off fairways due to the new grass being under stress from terrible recent summer growing conditions from big drought but overall in great shape. plenty of length and the shorter hole were great and did not detract from the round. they were all challenging and fun. i played the tips and had a great day. $55 with cart for non resident but worth every penny, it helped as i played very well so it was a great day and a great course. I plan on going back often.
