Feldspar can sometimes be friend, not foe

Maybe the most difficult course to walk in the region

In spite of the often rugged terrain, the conditioning is very good

Great scenery all around, with glimpses of the Connecticut River Valley

If you try to get cute and cut corners on the doglegs, the course can be punishing

It’s not the greens that have sideboards on the 11th and 12th holes, but the fairways

Unless you’re gunning for a 15, do not use your water wedge from the pond fronting the 14th green

6th fairway runs at an oblique angle to the tee and sports a landing area about as wide as a Machu Picchu runway

First three holes slide down a cleared hillside on ledges – so too might your ball if you don’t keep it on the safe side of the hole

One slip, and you’re dead as you try to navigate the monorail fairway of the 17th hole without fading away to oblivion on either side

Par 4 8th ends with a little buttonhook, keeping the green out of view on approach unless you really clobber your tee shot

The embankment separating pond from green on the short par 3 14th is slicker than a freshly shorn poodle

Uphill, downhill, and sidehill are lies you’ll get used to by the end of your round

More “don’t go there” zones than a date with someone coming off a third divorce

The elevation changes are as dramatic as on any course in the region

You need to pick your spots wisely to go aggressively for the flags

Greens mostly come in four flavors: Fast, firm, large and crowned

Overhitting greens can send your score into a death spiral

Expect your fairways-hit average to perceptibly drop

Due to the terrain, holes often link awkwardly
